How to Season a Wok

With proper use and care, a wok may last a lifetime. Seasoning a wok correctly is a key part of making sure your wok functions properly and keeps its non-stick finish.

Instructions

  1. Rinse your wok in hot water and scrub it lightly with a non-abrasive sponge. Rinse it once more.
  2. Add cooking oil to the wok and, using a paper towel, spread it around the pan in a thin layer.
  3. Heat the wok on your stovetop over medium to high heat for 3 to 4 minutes. While the wok is heating, continually move the oil around until it begins smoking and coats the entire surface of the wok.
  4. Turn off the heat and wait for the wok to cool.
  5. Once cooled, wipe the wok clean with paper towels or a sponge. Now you are ready to use your seasoned wok for all your food preparation needs!

How to Season a Wok

A wok is a versatile cooking tool of East Asian origin. It can be used in a variety of dishes, from stir-fries to steamed dumplings. To ensure your wok lasts a long time, you should season it to keep it from rusting. Here's how you can season your wok for optimum performance.

Instructions

  1. Wash your wok with mild soap and water. Dry it completely.
  2. Put the wok on a burner and turn the heat to medium-high.
  3. Pour in enough cooking oil (canola, vegetable, peanut, etc) to cover all the inner surfaces.
  4. Let the wok heat until you see smoke rising from the oil.
  5. Turn off the heat and use a paper towel to spread the oil around the interior of the wok.
  6. Turn the heat back on to medium-high for one minute, then turn it off.
  7. Remove the wok from the burner and use a paper towel to wipe out the excess oil.
  8. Your wok is now ready for cooking!

Tips

  • Make sure your wok is completely dry before you begin seasoning.
  • Don't overheat the oil, as this can damage your wok and release toxic fumes.
  • After seasoning, it’s a good idea to wipe the wok with a bit of oil before using it to keep it from rusting.
