How to Season a Wok
A wok is a versatile cooking tool of East Asian origin. It can be used in a variety of dishes, from stir-fries to steamed dumplings. To ensure your wok lasts a long time, you should season it to keep it from rusting. Here's how you can season your wok for optimum performance.
Instructions
- Wash your wok with mild soap and water. Dry it completely.
- Put the wok on a burner and turn the heat to medium-high.
- Pour in enough cooking oil (canola, vegetable, peanut, etc) to cover all the inner surfaces.
- Let the wok heat until you see smoke rising from the oil.
- Turn off the heat and use a paper towel to spread the oil around the interior of the wok.
- Turn the heat back on to medium-high for one minute, then turn it off.
- Remove the wok from the burner and use a paper towel to wipe out the excess oil.
- Your wok is now ready for cooking!
Tips
- Make sure your wok is completely dry before you begin seasoning.
- Don't overheat the oil, as this can damage your wok and release toxic fumes.
- After seasoning, it’s a good idea to wipe the wok with a bit of oil before using it to keep it from rusting.
