How to Season Cast Iron Cookware

Cast iron cookware is prized for its durability and heat retention. If properly maintained, cast iron can last for decades and become a beloved staple in your kitchen. An important step in maintaining cast iron cookware is seasoning. This process helps to “cure” the cast iron and prevents rust by creating a protective coating that keeps the metal from corroding.

Steps for Seasoning Cast Iron

  • Position oven rack in the middle and preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Clean casting with warm soapy water. A non-abrasive sponge can help remove any stubborn residue.
  • Thoroughly dry the cooking surface with a soft cloth and let it air-dry for a couple of minutes.
  • Spread a thin layer of vegetable oil or melted, unsalted shortening on the surface of the cookware.
  • Place the cookware upside down on the oven rack. Placing a foil-covered baking sheet on the rack below the cookware can help catch any drips.
  • Allow the cookware to bake for 1 hour.
  • Turn off the oven and leave the cookware inside until it has completely cooled.
  • Once cooled, lightly wipe away any excess oil.

Your cast iron cookware is now seasoned and should require very little additional maintenance. Enjoy cooking with your cast iron cookware.
