How to Remove a Cast Iron Tub

A cast iron tub is commonly installed in bathrooms for its durability and sturdiness, but it may need to be removed at some point. This guide explains how to safely and effectively remove a cast iron tub from your home.

Steps:

  • Turn off the water supply running to the tub. Locate the shut off valve that controls the hot and cold water supplies and turn the handle located on the valve all the way in a clockwise direction.
  • Remove the hardware connected to the cast iron tub. Unscrew and remove the faucet, drain, overflow/trip lever plate, as well as any other hardware attached to the tub.
  • Disconnect the drain from the wall. Use a wrench to disconnect the trap arm so the drain can hang freely.
  • Cut away the caulk bead. Use a razor blade to slice the caulk seal along the perimeter of the tub.
  • Gently pry the tub from the wall. Use a prybar to carefully remove the tub from its installation area in the wall.
  • Carefully carry the tub to its desired location or disposal site. Use the help of a second set of hands to gently move the tub.
