How to Season Cast Iron in the Oven
Seasoning cast iron is an important step in maintaining and protecting the pan. Not only will seasoning create a durable, non-stick surface, but it will also help to prevent rust and create a beautiful look. Here's how to season cast iron in the oven:
- Preheat the oven to the temperature called for in your recipe. Typically, the temperature should be between 250 and 500 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Clean the cast iron with a stiff-bristle brush and hot, soapy water to remove any grime.
- Once the pan is clean, dry it well with a kitchen towel or paper towels.
- Apply a thin layer of oil to the pan with a paper towel. Recommended oils include vegetable, peanut, canola, and olive oil.
- Place the pan in the oven, upside down, on the center rack. This will help drain off excess oil.
- Allow to bake for at least an hour or up to several hours. The pan is done when it no longer looks greasy and all excess oil has been absorbed.
- Turn the oven off and allow the pan to cool before handling.
