How to Transfer Prints to Fabric

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to transfer printed images--such as photographs, designs, and artwork-- onto fabric or fabric-based items. This method of image transfer can be used to produce custom fabric designs for clothing, handbags, quilting, and home décor projects.

Materials Needed

  • Fabric
  • Inkjet Printer
  • Laser Printer (optional)
  • Toner Transfer Paper
  • Iron
  • Spray Bottle filled with Water
  • Scrap Fabric or Pressing Cloth

Instructions

  1. Gather the materials you’ll need for the transfer, such as fabric, inkjet printer, paper, and iron.
  2. Create your desired image or artwork, sizing it to fit the fabric you wish to apply it to. Print the image onto the transfer paper, making sure the image is reversed (mirror-image) and printed on the correct side.
  3. Place your fabric onto a flat, heat-resistant surface like an ironing board. Position the transfer paper over the fabric image-side down.
  4. Set your iron to the hottest temperature setting without steam. Press the iron against the transfer paper for 10-30 seconds, depending on the type of paper you are using and the type of fabric.
  5. Spray the paper lightly with a spray bottle filled with water. Allow a few minutes for the paper to absorb the moisture.
  6. Gently rub the paper while it is still wet to remove it from the fabric. Continue until most of the paper has been removed. Be careful not to use too much force as this can damage the transfer.
  7. Replace the removed paper with a pressing cloth or scrap fabric. Cover it with a tea towel and iron again for 10-30 seconds until all the moisture has evaporated. This will set the transfer, so it won’t come off with washing.
