Transferring a photograph to fabric can make a unique, special piece of artwork or fabric item. Follow this guide to transfer images to fabric for a one-of-a-kind piece.
Things You'll Need:
- A color photograph or laser printed inkjet print
- Backing material like freezer paper, wax paper, or paper towels
- 100% cotton fabric
- Iron
- Warm water
- Soft cloth or sponge
Instructions
- Press your fabric with the iron. This is to remove any wrinkles before transferring your photograph. Make sure it is 100% cotton fabric.
- Trim your photograph to the size you want.
- Place the backing material onto the photograph. Make sure it is ironed on so there are no wrinkles. Place the backing material so that it is facing photo-side downwards.
- Put the photograph face down onto the fabric. Make sure it is centered.
- Cover the photograph with a thin cotton fabric.
- Press the fabric with your iron on the hottest steam setting for about three to five minutes. Make sure you press firmly.
- Once you are done pressing, check to make sure the photographic has transferred and all it's details. If there are some details that are missing, press the fabric for a few minutes more.
- Once you are satisfied with the transfer, let the fabric cool. Then, slowly and carefully peel off the backing material from the fabric.
- Put the fabric in warm water for about two minutes. This removes any remaining ink or paper that might still be on the fabric.
- Rinse the fabric well and then let it air dry or dry it with a soft cloth or a sponge.
