How to Make a Simple Fabric Box

Creating a fabric box is a simple yet creative way to reuse fabric, add a unique touch to your home, and store items. Making a fabric box is a great beginner's sewing project.

Instructions

You will need:

  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Sewing machine
  • Optional: Pins, glue gun

Step 1: Measure and Cut Fabric

Measure and cut the fabric for your project. You will need two rectangles for the box and two squares for the lid. Cut one of the rectangles 1 inch longer and 1 inch wider than the other. The two squares should be the same size as the longer and wider rectangles.

Step 2: Sew the Sides

Put the two rectangles together with the right sides facing each other. Sew the sides together with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Turn the sewn fabric right side out and press with an iron.

Step 3: Sew the Bottom and Top

Pin the bottom edge together and sew with a 1/2 inch seam allowance. Turn the fabric right side out and press with an iron. Repeat this step for the top.

Step 4: Attach Top and Bottom to the Box

Line up the top and bottom edges of the box and pin them together. Sew the top and bottom to the box with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Step 5: Optional Finishing Touches

If you choose to, you can use a glue gun to add a decorative edge or trims to your box.

How to Make a Simple Fabric Box

Create a simple fabric box to store items in a cute, organized way with just a few simple materials. This project is great for beginners, and can be customized to whatever size or color you desire.

Materials Needed

  • Fabric
  • Scissors
  • Thread and Needles
  • Pen, Chalk, and Ruler
  • Pins
  • Iron
  • Optional: Embellishments of your choice

Instructions

1. Pick out a fabric and measure the size of your fabric box. Do this by measuring the length and width of the box you want, and add an extra inch onto each side. On your fabric, use a pen, chalk, or a ruler to draw out your desired measurements and then cut your fabric accordingly.

2. Fold the edges of your fabric inward so the wrong side of the fabric is facing you. Iron the fabric to crease the folds in the right place.

3. Place two pieces of fabric right sides together and pin them in place. Sew the two pieces together with 1/4 inch seam allowance. Follow the edges to create a neat finish and leave a gap about 2 inches.

4. Turn the fabric right side out using the small gap left in your sewing. Iron the fabric and sew the gap shut.

5. Embellish the box with trims or fabric flowers if desired. Fill the box with whatever items you’d like and enjoy your new fabric box!
