Cleaning Electrical Contacts

Whether you are dealing with switches, relays, or any other type of electrical contact, it is important to keep these electrical contacts clean. A buildup of dirt, dust, or corrosion can interfere with the functioning of the component. Use the below steps to clean electrical contacts.

What You Will Need

  • Clean cloth
  • Rubbing alcohol
  • Q-tip
  • Canned air

Steps to Clean Electrical Contacts

  1. First, use a clean cloth to wipe off any debris from the surface of the electrical contacts.
  2. Next, use a Q-tip soaked in rubbing alcohol to gently scrub the contacts. Rubbing alcohol helps to remove dirt, dust, and oxidation from the contacts.
  3. After you finish scrubbing the contacts with the Q-tip, use canned air to blow dirt and dust away.
  4. Lastly, use a dry cloth or Q-tip to remove any remaining moisture from the contacts.

Cleaning Electrical Contacts

Electricity is integral for many parts of our lives, and electrical contacts help power various tools, vehicles, and appliances. Dirt, dust, and grease can build up on these contacts, rendering them less powerful and efficient. To keep your contacts functioning properly, take the time to clean them.

Instructions

  • Turn off the power source supplying the contacts.
  • Clean the contact surface with a rag and a small amount of a non-corrosive cleaner.
  • Allow the contact surface to dry with the rag.
  • Once the surface is dry, dip a cotton swab into total contact cleaner and apply it to the contact surface.
  • Remove any dirt, residue, or corrosion from the surface with a brass-wire brush.
  • Apply a light coat of contact lubricant to the contact.
  • Let the lubricant dry before turning the power source back on.

How to Clean Electrical Contacts

Electrical contacts are extremely important for the optimal functioning of electronic components and appliances. When they get dirty or corroded, current flow can become disrupted resulting in damaged devices. To maintain these key components, it is important to clean electrical contacts regularly. Follow this guide for an easy-to-follow method of cleaning electrical contacts.

Instructions

  1. Shut off the power before you start to clean the contacts. If you are cleaning a device with a plug, gently pull it out of the power outlet, and if you are cleaning the contacts of a motor use the off/on switch.
  2. Use a soft cloth, like a microfiber cloth, to gently wipe away the dirt and dust on the contacts. If the contacts are particularly gunked up, use an eraser to gently erase any dirt. Make sure to never rub too forcefully, as this could damage the contacts.
  3. Mix some baking soda and water together to create a paste. Using a soft brush or a toothbrush, evenly spread the paste on the contacts. Be sure to get into the nooks and crannys for a thorough cleaning. Let the paste sit for up to 10 minutes before wiping it away.
  4. Rinse the contacts with warm water and a soft cloth. Wipe until there is no visible paste or residue.
  5. Allow the contacts to dry completely before safely turning on the power or plugging the cables.
