How to Wire a Simple 120V Electrical Circuit
Wiring a simple 120V electrical circuit can be a practical skill to learn for any homeowner. Understanding the basics of how electricity works and how to wire a simple circuit can provide a safe and useful foundation for household projects. Here are the steps to follow to wire a basic 120V electrical circuit.
Steps:
- Turn of the main power source to the area you are working on. If needed, use a voltage tester to make sure there is no electricity in the area.
- Gather supplies. You’ll need 2-conductor wire, a junction box, outlet or switch, and the appropriate size circuit breaker for the wire.
- Fish the 2-conductor wire through the wall to connect the outlet or switch. Make sure the wall is clear of any existing studs.
- Connect the ground wiring from the two-conductor wire to the junction box. Ground wiring is the green wire, and should be twisted together with the junction box’s ground screw.
- Connect the neutral wiring from the two-conductor wire to the junction box. Neutral wiring is the white wire, and should be twisted together with the junction box’s neutral screw.
- Connect the hot wiring from the two-conductor wire to the junction box. Hot wiring is the black wire, and should be hooked up to the common terminal in the junction box.
- Hook up the outlet or switch to the junction box. Make sure the screws on the switch and outlet are tightened securely, and are firmly connected to the junction box.
- Connect the circuit breaker to the two-conductor wire. Make sure the circuit breaker is rated for the specific size and voltage of your two-conductor wire. Twist the circuit breaker securely to the wire.
- Turn the main power back on and test the circuit. Make sure to proceed with caution and use all safety risks.
