Steps to Replace a Defective Electrical Switch or Outlet

Replacing a defective electrical switch or outlet is a task that can be done by most homeowners. Taking the proper safety precautions, replacing a light switch or outlet is an easy way to upgrade your home’s electrical needs.

  1. Turn off the electricity. Before you begin any electrical work, make sure that you have shut off the power at the electrical panel box or fuse box.
  2. Remove the faceplate. Decorative faceplates are typically fastened to the wall with two small screws. Use a screwdriver to loosen and remove the plate.
  3. Unfasten the wires. The electrical wires are connected to the switch or outlet. Examine the wires. If they are open and not in a wire connector, then you need to turn off the power, twist the wires together, and secure the connection with a wire nut.
  4. Unscrew the device. Unscrew the old switch or outlet from the electrical box. Some switches and outlets are held in place with two screws. Carefully pull the switch away from the wall, as old electrical devices can be fragile.
  5. Install the new switch. Attach the screws to the new switch and place it back in the electrical box. Place the wires through the holes in the switch. Fasten the wires onto the switch according to the manufactures diagram.
  6. Secure the switch. Use the screws to secure the new switch or outlet to the electrical box.
  7. Attach the faceplate. Fasten the decorative plate to the wall with the screws.
  8. Turn on the electricity. Switch on the electricity at the breaker or fuse box and test your new switch or outlet.
