Treating Paronychia at Home: Self-Care Options

Paronychia is an infection of the skin around the fingernail. Although this condition is often mild and resolves quickly, it can become severe if not treated properly. Fortunately, many cases of paronychia can be managed at home using self-care methods. Here are some tips to help treat your paronychia and speed up the healing process:

  • Soak your hands in warm salt water several times a day for 20 minutes at a time.
  • Apply a topical antibiotic cream or lotion provided by your doctor to the affected finger.
  • Keep your hands clean and dry as best as possible.
  • Elevate your hands above your heart level when resting to reduce swelling.
  • Take an over-the-counter pain reliever if you are experiencing discomfort or pain.

Causes of Paronychia

Paronychia is caused by bacteria, fungi, or viruses entering the skin around the fingernail. Common triggers include damage to the skin around the nail, such as repeated manicures or exposure to water, cleansers, or harsh chemicals. In some cases, fungal infections can be the source of the problem.
