How to Reduce Facial Swelling After Surgery

It is quite normal to experience facial swelling after surgery. Although the degree of swelling will vary depending on the type of procedure, there are a few measures you can take to reduce facial swelling.

  • Take anti-inflammatory medication. A doctor can prescribe anti-inflammatory medication to help reduce swelling. Make sure to take the medication according to directions.
  • Apply a cold compress. Applying cold compresses is one of the most effective ways to reduce swelling. Wrap several ice cubes in a damp towel and apply it to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time.
  • Stay hydrated. Drinking plenty of water helps to flush out toxins and relieve swelling. Aim to drink 8-10 eight-ounce glasses of water per day.
  • Keep your head elevated. When sitting or sleeping, make sure to keep your head slightly elevated to help reduce swelling. You can use additional pillows to help raise your head.
  • Avoid salty foods. Eating salty foods can make facial swelling worse, so it is best to limit sodium intake. Look for low-sodium options whenever possible.
