How to Reduce Tongue Swelling

If your tongue has swollen, don’t panic. Fortunately, there are a number of steps you can take to reduce the swelling. With the right treatment, you can easily limit any discomfort and have your normal tongue back in no time.

Steps

  • Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. This helps in reducing infection and swelling. Dissolve one teaspoon of salt in warm water and swish the solution in your mouth for about a minute.
  • Consume cold foods and drinks. Low temperatures help constrict the blood vessels and limit swelling. Limit the temperature of your food and drinks to as low as possible without it being painful.
  • Take an anti-inflammatory. Ibuprofen, aspirin and other similar medications can help reduce swelling and prevent infection. It’s best to talk to your doctor before taking any medication.
  • Apply ice. This is especially helpful if your tongue has become inflamed. Wrap an ice pack in a thin cloth and press it into your tongue for 10 minutes at a time.
  • Relax. Stress can cause tongue swelling, so try to relax and avoid any painful activities or gestures, such as prolonged talking.

Tips

If your tongue is swollen and you experience any difficulty breathing or swallowing, seek immediate medical assistance.

If the swelling is due to a virus, wart or other similar issue, talk to your doctor for targeted treatment and advice.
