Grilling salmon is an easy and healthy way to enjoy this popular fish. When done right, it’s deliciously flavorful and tender, with a crispy, smoky crust. Here's how to grill salmon in four simple steps:
Start with fresh, never frozen, salmon fillets that are roughly the same thickness. Rinse the fillets under cold running water and pat them dry with a paper towel. Brush them lightly with oil and season with salt and pepper.
Your type of grill will determine the best way to prepare your salmon. For charcoal grills, allow the coals to burn until they are covered in grey ash and the heat is medium-high.
If using a gas grill, preheat it to medium-high. Make sure the grates are clean and well-oiled so that the salmon does not stick.
Place the salmon skin-side down on the preheated grill. Grill for 4 to 6 minutes, or until the edges of the fillet start to curl up. Flip and grill for an additional 4 to 6 minutes.
If you choose to use a marinade or sauce, brush it on the salmon during the last few minutes of cooking. This will ensure the flavor is fully absorbed without burning the salmon.
To test whether the salmon is cooked, gently press the surface with a finger. The flesh should bounce back and be slightly firm. If it's still soft, the salmon isn't done yet.
Most importantly, don't overcook the salmon! When done, take the salmon off the grill and serve immediately.
