Smoking weed for years can become an addiction. Even though everyone's addiction is unique, there are some key steps to quitting weed. You must first develop an understanding of how weed can affect your health, then you must come up with a plan for quitting for good, and finally you need to take steps to remain committed the quit smoking.

Step 1: Learn About the Health Effects

Do some research and find out about the physical and mental health effects of smoking weed for an extended period of time. Understanding why you want to quit smoking and the effect can have on your health can be motivating and powerful.

Step 2: Create a Quit Plan

Start small by coming up with a quit plan. Think about how and why you want to quit and develop a realistic plan to achieve it. Some ideas include:

  • Fix a quit date and don't entertain any thoughts of smoking weed after that.
  • Consider replacing weed with other activities such as exercise, reading, listening to music, etc.
  • Mark your progress and celebrate small wins (i.e. completing one week of weed-free days)
  • Talk to a friend or family member to share your progress and get encouragement.

Step 3: Stay Committed

It may be difficult at times but remember why you quit in the first place. Talk to a therapist or join a support group to help stay motivated. Replace smoking weed with other healthier activities and try to remove any remaining triggers from your environment. All of these strategies can help keep you on track.
