How to Propagate Baby Spider Plants

Baby spider plants, also known as Spiderettes, can easily be propagated to produce many more plants quickly and easily. When properly propagated, these plants will grow quickly and develop into larger, lusher specimens. Follow these steps to begin propagating your own baby spider plants.

Steps:

  1. Remove the spiderette from the mother plant. Carefully pluck the baby plant off the main plant. Don’t worry if some of the roots break off, as they will quickly regenerate.
  2. Plant the Spiderette in its own individual pot. Use a commercial potting mix or make your own blend using equal parts soil, peat, and sand.
  3. Water the pot and make sure to keep the Spiderette evenly moist. Once established, you can water it less.
  4. Place the pot in a bright spot but protect it from the sun's direct rays. Spider Plants prefer a shaded or filtered light location.
  5. Give the Spiderette a gentle tug after a few weeks. If the roots are resisting, the plant has become rooted and may even be growing new leaves. If the Spiderette easily pulls out of the soil, its roots have yet to anchor in the pot.
  6. Replant the Spiderette if it pulls easily from the soil. Leave the top half of the plant visible while burying more of the stem and root in the soil.

Continue to care for the Spiderette and enjoy having a healthier, fuller plant in weeks.
