Propagating Geraniums from Cuttings
Geraniums are easy to propagate from cuttings. If you know how to take a cutting from a geranium and pot it correctly, you can propagate your favorite variety and increase your stock.
Instructions
- Take a cutting from the geranium. Cut a stem about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) long, making sure that it has at least two leaf nodes. Cut the stem at a 45-degree angle, just below a node.
- Remove the lower leaves from the cutting. Leave only two or three of the top leaves at the tip of the cutting.
- Dip the cut end of the cutting into a rooting hormone. This will greatly help the rooting process.
- Plant the cutting in a small, well-draining pot filled with soilless seedling mix. You may also use regular potting soil.
- Water the cutting gently and keep the soil moist. Place a clear plastic bag over the pot to form a makeshift greenhouse. This will help maintain humidity.
- Place the pot in a bright, airy location. Do not expose the cutting to full sun as this will dry it out.
- Check the cutting after 3-4 weeks. If the cutting has grown roots and is developing new growth, it is ready to be transplanted into a larger pot.
