Propagating Geraniums from Cuttings

Geraniums are easy to propagate from cuttings. If you know how to take a cutting from a geranium and pot it correctly, you can propagate your favorite variety and increase your stock.

Instructions

  1. Take a cutting from the geranium. Cut a stem about 4-6 inches (10-15 cm) long, making sure that it has at least two leaf nodes. Cut the stem at a 45-degree angle, just below a node.
  2. Remove the lower leaves from the cutting. Leave only two or three of the top leaves at the tip of the cutting.
  3. Dip the cut end of the cutting into a rooting hormone. This will greatly help the rooting process.
  4. Plant the cutting in a small, well-draining pot filled with soilless seedling mix. You may also use regular potting soil.
  5. Water the cutting gently and keep the soil moist. Place a clear plastic bag over the pot to form a makeshift greenhouse. This will help maintain humidity.
  6. Place the pot in a bright, airy location. Do not expose the cutting to full sun as this will dry it out.
  7. Check the cutting after 3-4 weeks. If the cutting has grown roots and is developing new growth, it is ready to be transplanted into a larger pot.
