How to Propagate Azaleas

Azaleas are popular flowering shrubs usually grown for their colorful blooms in the spring. Many species are easy to propagate from cuttings, allowing gardeners to create more plants. Follow these steps to learn how to propagate azaleas from cuttings:

Steps for Propagating Azaleas

  1. Choose a healthy azalea to cut. Consider cutting about 4- to 6-inch long stems, which have at least two leaf nodes. Remove any remaining flowers from the stem.
  2. Fill a pot or container with potting mix containing at least some sand, and water it to make the sand more moist. Poke a hole into the soil with a pencil.
  3. Dust the bottom 1/3 of the cutting with powdered rooting hormone. Place the lower half of the stem into the hole in the soil, and gently firm it in.
  4. Cover the pot with a plastic bag, making sure the bag does not touch the stem, and cut several small holes near the top for ventilation. Secure the top of the bag with a rubber band or string.
  5. Place the pot in a bright, but shaded area with indirect sunlight. If your area is hot, find a place with some air movement.
  6. Check the plant daily, making sure the soil is still damp, but not wet. After about a month, remove the plastic bag to air it out, and then test the rooting progress with a gentle tug on the stem.
  7. When the cutting has become rooted, release the pot from the bag, and repot the new plant in a larger pot with the necessary soil. Water as needed.
