How to Break a Fever in an Infant

Infant fevers can quickly become dangerous if they are not carefully monitored and managed. The best way to break a fever in an infant is to use cooling measures to bring the baby’s temperature down, such as lukewarm baths, cool compresses, and light layers of clothing.

Instructions

  • Give your child a lukewarm bath. The lukewarm temperature will help lower your baby's fever. Use a damp sponge or rag and mild soap if desired. After bathing them, cover your baby in light layers of clothing.
  • Place cool compresses on your child’s head. You can also place cool compresses on your child’s chest, stomach, neck, and legs. Don't make the compresses too cold, as this could make your baby uncomfortable.
  • Provide your child with fluids to drink. Offer water, juice, or electrolyte drinks to help keep your child from becoming dehydrated. However, do not let your baby overhydrate. Babies can easily become dehydrated if they do not receive enough fluids.
  • Be mindful of your child’s environment. Try to keep your child’s room and areas where they are sitting at a comfortable temperature. When possible, keep the temperature cool, but not cold.
  • Call your baby’s physician if the fever does not break. If your child’s fever persists despite your efforts to break it, you should call their doctor right away for further advice.
