How Do I Know If I'm Being Pulled Over?

Spotting the interaction between you and law enforcement can be unnerving. You may feel like you’re in a vulnerable situation. If you are unsure whether your interaction is a routine traffic stop, there are a few signs to be aware of that may indicate you’ve been stopped by a law enforcement officer.

  • The officer will activate his or her lights and/or sirens to indicate they are trying to pull you over.
  • The officer will use their patrol car to position themselves parallel with your car, indicating they are attempting to pull you over.
  • The officer may tap or flash their flashlight against your car, often on the taillights, which is a sign to pull over.

It's important to remain calm and pull over as soon as possible when you are being pulled over. If you need to, you can find a safe area to pull over. Use your signal to indicate you are turning, roll down your window, and follow instructions.
