How to Treat Body Lice

Body lice are tiny insects that can feed on your body and clothing that get passed through close physical contact. These lice are itchy and can potentially cause serious skin and health problems if left untreated. Fortunately, there are a variety of treatments you can use to safely and effectively remove body lice.

Step 1: Wash Infested Clothing and Bedding

The first step to treating body lice is to wash in hot water all clothing, bedding, and any other fabric that may have been exposed to the lice. Use a strong detergent to help kill any lingering lice or eggs and run the washing machine on high heat. Vacuum any furniture or carpets in the area to remove any lice or eggs that may have fallen off.

Step 2: Apply Over-The-Counter Lice Remedies

Once the area has been washed and vacuumed, you can apply an over-the-counter lice remedy. These products typically come in liquid, cream, or foam forms and contain ingredients such as permethrin or pyrethrins, which have been proven to effectively kill lice and eggs. Read the instructions carefully and follow them precisely.

Step 3: Comb Through Sections of Hair

If the over-the-counter treatments fail, you can use a specialized lice comb to manually remove lice and eggs from your body and hair. Start at your scalp and comb through small sections of hair at a time until all of the lice has been removed. Be sure to thoroughly remove all lice and eggs as some may be stuck to individual hairs or hidden away in your scalp.

Step 4: Repeat Treatments as Necessary

Once the lice has been removed, you should repeat the entire process of washing, vacuuming, applying lice treatments, and combing every ten days or so to make sure that all of the lice and eggs have been killed. It is also important to practice good hygiene and avoid contact with individuals who may be carrying lice.
