How to Use a Lice Comb on Dry Hair

Lice combs are specifically designed tools that are used to remove lice from the hair of infested persons. Combing hair with a lice comb is a tedious and potentially lengthy process, but it may be the most effective and safest way to remove lice and their eggs from the hair.

Steps

1. Place the infested person in an area that is well lit and arrange their hair in a comfortable style, either up or down.

2. Start at the nape of the neck, taking small sections, about ½ inch wide. Use the lice comb to pull the entire section of hair through.

3. Pay attention to rough areas and regrowth, this is where lice tend to hide. Continue combing for at least 15-20 minutes.

4. Dip the lice comb in a cup of warm water with a few drops of liquid dish soap. This breaks down the glue-like material, which the lice use to attach their eggs to the hair shafts.

5. Place the section of hair between the teeth and draw the comb downward towards the scalp. Repeat this process 10-15 times from root to end. This should remove the lice and their eggs.

6. Rinse the lice comb in the cup of soapy water and place the active lice and eggs you have collected in the cup, then empty its contents into the toilet and flush.

7. Continue combing the remaining sections of hair for at least 10-15 minutes. When you have finished, burn the lice comb or throw it away.

How to Use a Lice Comb on Dry Hair

Using a lice comb on dry hair is a safe and easy way to remove lice from your scalp. It's important, however, to undertake this step properly to ensure you're able to safely and effectively remove all lice and eggs.

Steps:

  1. Wash and dry your hair thoroughly using your regular shampoo and conditioner. Be sure to get all of the oil and excess dirt out.
  2. Apply a good conditioner to your scalp. Make sure to thoroughly cover your scalp with conditioner, from the nape of your neck all the way up to the crown of your head.
  3. Separate your hair into sections. This will make it easier to comb through your hair. Begin by taking a small section of hair at the crown of your head and combing it out with your fingers.
  4. Start at the root of the hair and use a fine-toothed lice comb to comb the hair for lice and eggs. Take your time here and make sure you are thorough. Begin by combing along the scalp and slowly make your way out of the hair shaft. Remember to check each hair strand from root to tip.
  5. Rinse off the lice and eggs with warm water and then apply a good conditioner to soothe the scalp.
  6. Continue separating your hair into sections and combing each section until the entire head has been checked. Be sure to check behind the ears and around the nape of the neck for lice.
  7. Rinse your hair again and style as usual.
