Troubleshooting a Check Engine Light

If your check engine light has just illuminated, it's important to take a few troubleshooting steps before diving into an auto repair shop. An illuminated check engine light may indicate either a serious or a minor problem, so it's important to take the right steps to diagnose the issue.

Steps you can take

  • Find the owner's manual for your car or truck and look up "check engine light". Most manuals provide descriptions of the different warnings the light may indicate.
  • Check your gas cap to make sure it's securely attached and tight. A loose or missing gas cap can cause your vehicle to not pass emissions testing, and can set off the check engine light.
  • Check your dashboard for other warning lights. If you see lights other than the check engine light, this may provide clues for what could be wrong with your engine.
  • Check the vehicle's belt and other hoses. If the belt is too tight or too loose, or any hoses are coming loose, this could set off the check engine light.
  • Try resetting the check engine light by disconnecting the battery for15 minutes and then reconnecting it.
  • Stop at an auto parts store and ask for a free computer scan of the vehicle. Many parts stores offer this service to help you diagnose the issue and see if it is minor or more serious.
  • If the scan indicates a problem, make an appointment with a certified mechanic to repair the issue.
