Changing the Oil on a Harley Davidson Twin Cam Engine

Changing the oil is an important part of regular maintenance for your Harley Davidson Twin Cam engine. Putting in fresh oil can help extend the life of your engine by reducing wear and tear on its various components. To get the job done yourself, here are the steps you should take:

  1. Gather the necessary tools and materials. Before you start, make sure you have the right type of oil, the right wrench, an oil disposal container, and an oil filter removal tool. Some other items you may want to consider gathering include rags, a drain pan, and a funnel.
  2. Placing the bike on a stable platform for easy maintenance. Make sure the bike won't move while you work on it. If the ground is too soft, a stand to help hold it in place.
  3. Locate the oil drain plug, located on the bottom of the engine. You'll need to use the wrench to loosen the plug and let the oil drain out. Have the oil disposal container ready to collect the fluid.
  4. Locate and remove the oil filter. This is usually located directly next to the oil drain plug. Use the oil filter removal tool to remove old the filter. Now is also a good time to check and clean the oil screen.
  5. Install the new oil filter. Make sure to fill it with new oil before installation. Then, use the removal tool to tighten the filter securely.
  6. Reinstall the oil drain plug and tighten it with the wrench. Then, add new oil to the engine. You’ll need to check the dipstick and oil tank capacity in your user's manual to make sure you're using the right amount.

You're now finished with the oil change. Check for leaks around the drain plug and filter before starting your motorcycle again.
