Tighten a Drive Belt in Six Simple Steps

It's important to keep your drive belt tight and properly tensioned to prevent slippage and other issues from arising. Following these six simple steps can ensure your drive belt is in the best condition.

  • Place a wrench over the adjuster bolt on the tensioner pulley.
  • Turn the adjuster bolt clockwise using a ratchet and socket to loosen it.
  • Rotate the tensioner pulley counterclockwise using a wrench to add tension to the belt.
  • Check the belt’s alignment by rotating the crankshaft pulley two full times.
  • While moving the belt by hand, make sure the tensioner pulley moves no more than 3/4 of an inch.
  • Once the tension of the belt is right, tighten the adjuster bolt.
