Storing Buttercream Frosting

Buttercream frosting can make cakes, cookies, and cupcakes look and taste amazing. But properly storing it is essential for preserving its flavor and texture. To save your buttercream frosting and make sure it tastes great later on, here are a few helpful tips.

Instructions

  • Position the buttercream frosting in an airtight container. To prevent air from getting into the container, put a piece of plastic wrap over the frosting’s surface before covering the container. This will also keep the frosting from drying out.
  • Place the container in the refrigerator. Leave the frosting in there until you’re ready to use it. It will stay in the fridge for up to three days.
  • Allow the frosting to rest at room temperature when you’re ready to use it. Leave it out for about half an hour to reach a spreadable consistency. If the frosting is still too cold, give it a few more minutes to thaw.
  • Re-whip the buttercream frosting before applying it to the cake or cupcakes. Use a handheld or stand mixer to beat the buttercream for a few minutes. This will ensure that the frosting is light and fluffy enough for spreading.
