Leaving Your Pets Alone While on Vacation: What You Need to Know

Vacations can be a time of fun and relaxation, but they can also be a cause of stress if you’re worried about leaving your beloved pets behind. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to make sure your pet is well taken care of while you’re away.

Steps

  • Find a trustworthy pet-sitter: Choose someone whom you know and trust to look after your pets while you’re away. Discuss your pet’s need for special care or medications and make sure the sitter is comfortable accommodating them.
  • Provide food and other supplies: Make sure your pet-sitter has all they need to take care of your pet’s needs. Stock up on food, treats, and any medications. Also, leave a list of emergency contacts in case of illness or injury.
  • Create a comfortable environment: Make sure the pet-sitter is familiar with your pet’s routine and is comfortable with the environment in which they’ll be staying. Keep their favourite toys nearby for comfort.
  • Check on your pet: If possible, call your pet-sitter to check in and make sure all is well. If the pet-sitter experiences any difficulty caring for your pet, they should contact the emergency contacts you have left on the list.

Tips

  • Make sure your pet-sitter has a key to your home for easy access.
  • Consider having more than one pet-sitter to provide backup in case of emergency.
  • Find a pet-sitter recommended by a friend or neighbour.
  • Leave detailed instructions, including feeding instructions and emergency contacts.
  • If available, hire a pet-sitting service and have a professional take care of your pet.

Warnings

Never leave your pet alone for extended periods of time. Make sure your pet-sitter is available for regular visits throughout the duration of your vacation.
