How to Remove Soy Sauce Stains from Colored & White Clothing

Food stains can often be difficult to remove, and soy sauce can be particularly problematic. If you've managed to get soy sauce on your colored or white clothing, it's important to act quickly in order to prevent the stain from setting in. Here are some simple steps to help you salvage your clothing.

Removing Soy Sauce Stains from Colored Clothing

For colored clothing, the quicker you can attend to the stain, the more likely it is that you'll be able to remove it:

  • Blot the area with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove as much of the liquid as possible.
  • If possible, rinse the garment with cold water from the back side of the stain, as this can help to prevent it from fully setting.
  • Mix a solution of 1 part mild laundry detergent with 8 parts cool water, and use this to gently scrub the stain; be sure to avoid scrubbing too much, as this could cause the stain to spread.
  • Rinse with cold water, and inspect the stain. If it has not been completely removed, repeat steps 2-4.
  • Treat the stain with a shop-bought spot cleaner or laundry pre-treatment.
  • Wash the item as normal.

Removing Soy Sauce Stains from White Clothing

On white clothing, the job of removing a soy sauce stain is even more difficult. Again, the quicker you can attend to the stain, the better:

  • Blot the area with a clean cloth or paper towel to remove as much liquid as possible.
  • Mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with 2 cups of cold water, and use this mixture to gently scrub the stain.
  • Rinse with cold water, and inspect the stain. If it has not been completely removed, repeat steps 2-3.
  • Treat the stain with a shop-bought spot cleaner or laundry pre-treatment.
  • Place the item on an old towel, and pour a mixture of 1 part white vinegar and 1 part cold water onto the stain.
  • Leave for a few minutes to allow the vinegar to penetrate, then dab the area with a clean cloth or paper towel.
  • Rinse, and inspect the stain to see whether it has been removed.
  • If not, repeat steps 2-7.
  • Wash the item as normal.
