How to Find a Leak in a Tire
Finding a leak in a tire isn't always as easy as it sounds. With some diligent work though, the right tools, and an experienced eye, getting to the bottom of the issue can be a breeze.
Steps
- First, make sure you have all the necessary tools. These include a tire pressure gauge, soap and water, and a flashlight.
- Check the air pressure of your tire before beginning. Take note of the tire pressure to help you identify when you’ve reached the right pressure.
- Inflate the tire to the manufacturer’s specifications. If you're unable to inflate to manufacturer specifications, try to inflate it slightly more than when you began.
- Mix a small amount of dish soap and water in a spray bottle. Once the mixture is complete, lightly spray the tire from several angles. If there is a leak, bubbles should start forming at the point of the leak.
- If you do not see any bubbles forming, you'll need to look more closely for a puncture. Use the flashlight to inspect the tire from every angle. If you can't see a puncture, it may be time to take the tire to a technician for further examination.
- If a puncture is found, you may be able to take care of it yourself depending on the size of the hole. Use a tire patch kit to patch the inside of the tire you found the puncture in. For more extensive damages, take the tire to a shop and have it patched professionally by a technician.
Once the hole is patched, reinflate the tire to the appropriate pressure. Check for air pressure regularly to ensure that the tire is properly inflated at all times. This should help prevent any future leaks from occurring.
