How to Ice Skate Backwards

Ice skating is an exhilarating and fun activity to do with friends or family. Learning how to skate backwards is both a challenge and a great skill to have. Here are some tips to get you on your way to figure skating like a pro:

Steps

  1. Start at a slow, comfortable pace. Hold your arms out in front of your body at shoulder level and focus on a point at the far end of the rink.
  2. Put a bend in your knees as you push off with your feet and lightly shift your weight. Make sure that your feet are pointing outwards.
  3. To turn, tense up your feet and glutes and press down with one foot in a scissoring motion. This will help you pivot in the direction you want to go.
  4. As you become comfortable at slow speeds, increase your speed and try different types of turns. Use crossovers or one-foot turns for more advanced control.

Tips

  • Be sure to wear supportive skates and use helmet and protective padding.
  • Take skating lessons for tailored advice and feedback.
  • Let your body be your guide. Listen to your movements and trust your balance.
