How to Ice Skate Backwards
Ice skating is an exhilarating and fun activity to do with friends or family. Learning how to skate backwards is both a challenge and a great skill to have. Here are some tips to get you on your way to figure skating like a pro:
Steps
- Start at a slow, comfortable pace. Hold your arms out in front of your body at shoulder level and focus on a point at the far end of the rink.
- Put a bend in your knees as you push off with your feet and lightly shift your weight. Make sure that your feet are pointing outwards.
- To turn, tense up your feet and glutes and press down with one foot in a scissoring motion. This will help you pivot in the direction you want to go.
- As you become comfortable at slow speeds, increase your speed and try different types of turns. Use crossovers or one-foot turns for more advanced control.
Tips
- Be sure to wear supportive skates and use helmet and protective padding.
- Take skating lessons for tailored advice and feedback.
- Let your body be your guide. Listen to your movements and trust your balance.
