How to Inline Skate

Inline skating is a great form of exercise and recreation but it's important to take the proper safety precautions! Before you begin, make sure you've got the right equipment and have taken the time to learn the basics.

Steps:

  • Gather and check inline skate safety gear. A good set of gear consists of a helmet, kneepads, elbow pads, and wrist guards. Once you have the gear, make sure it fits properly and is well adjusted to your body.
  • Find a flat and preferably smooth surface to practice on. Do not attempt to use your inline skates on rough surfaces like asphalt or dirt. Instead, look for papercrete or even a gym linoleum.
  • Start in a safe area. Next to the wall of a building, tree, fence, or light pole is perfect.
  • Put on your skates. The laces should be tight, but not too tight, so your feet don't go numb.
  • Once your skates are on, make sure your weight is evenly distributed on both skates. Place your feet and your hands firmly on the ground.
  • Use the wall to stand up on your skates in the right position. Shift your weight to the balls of your feet, and after you are steady move your hand away from the wall.
  • You're now ready to start skating. Push off and roll smoothly, allowing your feet to move freely and nimbly in the skating motion.
  • Practice stopping. When it is time to stop, use your foot that is behind you for powerful braking. This will keep you steady and prevent you from slipping and losing your balance.
  • With practice, you can finally start mastering the basics and have some fun inline skating. Experiment with turning, doing stunts, and learning how to start and stop quickly on your skates.
