How to Make Hot Ice
Making hot ice is an exciting, science-based experiment that involves creating a material referred to as sodium acetate trihydrate, or “hot ice.” With the right materials and just a few simple steps, you can have your own batch of hot ice in no time!
- Gather the materials for your hot ice. You’ll need sodium acetate, white vinegar, a pot or container, a spoon and some warm water.
- Mix the sodium acetate and vinegar together in the pot or container and stir until fully blended.
- Place the pot on the stove over medium-low heat and bring the solution to a gentle boil.
- Once boiling, remove the pot from the heat and add hot water, stirring until the solution has thickened.
- At that point, you’ll see some crystals of sodium acetate forming. Gently stir the solution until the crystals settle and the solution becomes clear again.
- Allow your hot ice to cool for about 20-30 minutes. During this time, the solution will transform into a solid material.
- Once cooled, the hot ice can be picked up and handled. The material is delicate though, so take care not to break it.
