Clean an Ice Maker or Ice Machine

Keeping your ice maker or ice machine clean helps make sure that the ice produced is safe to consume. Here are three easy ways to maintain a clean ice machine:

Step 1: Manual Cleaning

Conduct manual cleaning often so your machine stays in peak condition. Start by unplugging or shutting off the machine. Dismantle the removable parts, such as the ice bin, and soak them in warm, soapy water. Use a sponge, brush, or non-abrasive cloth to scrub inside the machine where dirt and debris can accumulate. Once you have cleaned the parts, rinse them in clean water and soak them for a few more minutes. Set the parts aside on a clean dry towel to dry.

Step 2: Sanitizing Solution Cleaning

Make a solution of one tablespoon of chlorine bleach per gallon of water. Dunk cloths, brushes, and other cleaning materials into the sanitizing solution. Use the materials to scrub the inner and outer surfaces of the machine, paying special attention to the ice bin. Rinse and dry once you are done.

Step 3: Vinegar Solution Cleaning

Mix one cup of white vinegar with one gallon of hot water. Soak a cleaning cloth or brush in the vinegar solution and use it to scrub the interior and exterior surfaces of the machine. Rinse and dry the components thoroughly when you're done.
