Training your cat to use the litter box is a straightforward but important process that takes patience and consistency. By understanding how cats think and learn, setting up a litter box to fit your cat's needs, and properly introducing it to your cat you can train your cat to use the litter box with ease.
Choose a spot in your home for the litter box that is accessible to your cat and also out of the way. Make sure the area is quiet and away from any distractions. Use a shallow pan or litter box that’s large enough for your cat to move freely.
Fill it at least three inches deep with non-scented, clumping litter according to manufacturer's directions. If you are changing litters, mix the new litter with the old to help your cat adjust to the transition.
Leave the box in an accessible, but relatively quiet area so your cat will feel comfortable checking it out. Cover the bottom of the box with a small blanket or towel to create a secure feeling for your cat.
When your cat uses the litter box, reward him with a treat or verbal praise to associate the litter box with positive reinforcement. You can also sprinkle a bit of catnip in the box or place a toy nearby.
