Your Guide to Using a Squat Toilet in India

Squat toilets are an essential part of everyday life for many people in India. Traditional Indian toilets come in two main forms - one that is used with squatting, and one with a sitting position. Knowing the basic steps of using a squat toilet might be helpful for travelers and those new to the country.

Preparing to Use a Squat Toilet

  • Check for a toilet seat. While most toilets in India are squat only, some may have a separate toilet seat available to place over the hole. It is often provided and worth a look.
  • Roll up trousers/skirts. It’s not only more comfortable, but also much more hygienic when using a squat toilet if you are wearing clothing that can easily be pulled up to the knee.
  • Check if there’s a flush. Generally, the squat toilet is made up of two pans, one for use and another for collection. It will be helpful to find out if the toilet has a separate flush mechanism or the two pans are connected to the same system.

Using the Toilet in a Squatting Position

  • Positioning. Place the feet on either side of the pan so that the buttocks are in line with the hole. When squatting, one should aim to have the hips below the knees so that the natural weight of the body helps in the elimination process.
  • Holding. It is recommended to hold on to the wall or frame of the toilet so as to aid the balance while squatting.
  • Be Patient. Taking the time to get positioned, comfortable and balanced is much better than having to repeat the process multiple times.
  • Flush if available. Once done using the toilet, it is necessary to flush the toilet, if it is available.

Optional Steps

  • Cleaning. It is recommended to use water or a cleaning agent such as toilet paper, a bidet, etc., to clean the area.
  • Using Disinfectants. Disinfectants, such as hand sanitizer, can be used before and after using the toilet.
