How to Fix a Running Toilet

Having a running toilet can cause a lot of stress and frustration, but the great news is that there are several options for you to try and fix the problem yourself. This guide will help take you through the steps for fixing your running toilet.

Materials Needed:

  • A pair of rubber gloves
  • A flathead screwdriver
  • A Phillip's head screwdriver
  • A wrench or adjustable wrench
  • A toilet plunger
  • White vinegar
  • Sandpaper
  • Toilet bowl cleaner

Steps:

  • First, inspect the flapper or plastic valve. This can be located at the bottom of the tank. Is it cracked, warped, or otherwise damaged? If it is, replace it with a new flapper.
  • Look for obstructions in the flapper or in the fill tube. The fill tube is a vertical piece of plastic located in the corner of the tank near the valve. Use your hands to remove any debris from the tube.
  • Inspect the float ball, which is a round, open-topped, hollow plastic ball that is attached to the valve float arm. If it is cracked, warped, or otherwise damaged, replace it with a new float ball.
  • Clean the flush valve seat. To do this you will need to turn off the water and flush the toilet. Use the wrench to remove the bolts on the side of the valve. Remove the flush valve and sandpaper the seating area to remove any build-up.
  • Reassemble the flush valve. Put the new flush valve back together and turn the water back on. Test the toilet to see if it is still running.
  • If the toilet is still running, pour a cup of white vinegar into the tank. Wait 15 minutes and then flush the toilet. This should help to dissolve any scale build-up that may be causing the toilet to run.
  • If the toilet is still running after this, use the toilet plunger to try to dislodge any debris in the tank. If this does not work, you may need to call a professional to help diagnose and fix the issue.
  • Once the toilet is fixed, use a toilet bowl cleaner to clean the tank and bowl. This will keep your toilet running smoothly for many years to come.
