How to Prune Dill

Pruning dill is an essential part of keeping your herb garden looking health and trimmed. Properly cared for dill can result in a bountiful harvest. Follow the steps below to help ensure your dill bush is in top condition.

  • Start pruning in early spring. Cut back all of the stalks of the dill plant to the soil line. This will encourage the dill to bush out and provide a fuller look when the growth is done.
  • Regularly shape your bush by pruning back new growth throughout the summer. You should cut each dill stalk back to ensure it is no more than eight to ten inches in height.
  • Keep track of which stalks you've pruned. Note the date and number of stalks you cut back. That way you can ensure that you're doing it regularly throughout the summer.
  • Continue trimming as needed through the end of the growing season. As with any bush, keeping the shape of the plant will ensure it stays lush and produce quality herbs.
  • In late summer, you can use your pruners once more to lightly shape the bush. You should only prune the top of the dill that is in excess so as not to damage any lower buds or new growth.
  • Lastly, once the dill starts to die back in the winter, prune back all of the stalks to the soil line to get ready for the following growing season.

With the correct pruning techniques, you can ensure that your dill bush will remain healthy and continue to produce abundant harvests. Follow the steps above and you will have dill to last throughout the year.
