How to Grow Dill Indoors

Although dill can often be found growing outdoors in the spring and summer season, it’s still possible to have this tasty herb indoors all year round. There’s nothing quite like fresh, home-grown dill, so here’s all you need to know to get started.

What You’ll Need

  • Individual pot or flat tray
  • Potting mix
  • Organic fertilizer (optional)
  • 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day
  • Water as needed

Steps for Growing Dill Indoors

  1. Choose a 12-inch pot with drainage holes on the bottom or a flat tray that is at least two inches deep.
  2. Fill the pot or tray with pre-fertilized potting mix or purchase individual bags of mix and an organic fertilizer to add later.
  3. Water the soil until it is evenly moist but not overly saturated. Excessive moisture can lead to root rot, so test the soil with a finger before watering.
  4. Scatter the dill seeds evenly throughout the soil. Dill can become unruly in a pot, so select a bushier variety. Place the pot or tray in a windowsill that receives 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day.
  5. As the dill begins to germinate and grow, use a pair of scissors to thin out less-desirable stems. If necessary, feed the plant organic fertilizer as directed per package instructions.
  6. Harvest when leaves have reached full size and have become crisp. Re-sow every four weeks for a continuous supply of fresh dill.
