Tips on How to Prevent Freezer Burn

It’s stressful and heartbreaking to experience freezer burn on stored food. Here are some tips on how to prevent this from happening in the future:

  • Wrap food in moisture-proof materials. Heavy-duty aluminum foil, plastic wrap, freezer bags and airtight containers are all great options.
  • Label stored food and organize your freezer, so you know what’s inside and what’s older.
  • The coldest areas in your freezer are at the top and the bottom, so place food there to prevent freezer burn.
  • When packing food for the freezer, leave about an inch of space between the food and container walls, so the cold air can circulate around it.
  • To accelerate the cooling process, place items in ice water prior to storing them in the freezer.
  • Keep the temperature in your freezer as low as possible and, if your model has a ‘fast-freeze’ or ‘power-freeze’ setting, use it.
  • Do not leave your freezer door open for long periods of time. This will cause the temperature inside the freezer to rise.

By following these tips you can maximize the amount of time food can be safely stored in your freezer without the risk of freezer burn.
