How to Keep Bees Away

Bees can be a nuisance in areas around the home – they can buzz around you while you’re trying to relax on your patio or create a daisy chain of honeycomb in your eaves! Fortunately, there are a few simple steps that you can take to discourage bees from settling near your home.

  • Avoid planting flowers and trees that attract bees in your yard. Examples include lavender, chamomile, tulips, and honeysuckle.
  • Install bee traps around the area. There are commercial bee traps available online and in stores, or you can make your own using a large container with narrow openings at the top and bottom.
  • Create a bee repellent. Mix two teaspoons of liquid dish soap with two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, one teaspoon of sugar, and one cup of water. Store the mixture in a spray bottle and spray it near areas where bees tend to congregate.
  • Seal off any holes or cracks where bees might enter your home. Check around windows and doors, as well as in your walls and eaves for any entry points.
  • Eliminate any food sources that might be attracting bees. Keep fish ponds and bird feeders away from your home, and make sure to pick up any fallen fruit around your yard.

By following these steps you can make your home less attractive to bees, and enjoy time spent outdoors without worrying about a swarm of buzzing insects!
