How to Identify Africanized Honey Bees

Africanized honey bees, also known as killer bees, are hybrids of African and European bees. They are more aggressive than other bee species and are known to attack humans in defense of their hive. Learning how to recognize these bees can help protect you and your family.

Step 1: Look at the Size of the Bees

Africanized honey bee colonies are composed of smaller, darker bees, usually 3/4 of an inch long. Although there is overlap in size between Africanized bees and other European bee varieties, their smaller size can help you identify an Africanized bee.

Step 2: Note the Marking and Color of the Bees

Africanized honey bees also have different markings and coloration from European bees. They have stripes of alternating yellow and brown colors, whereas European bees have brown and cream-colored stripes.

Step 3: Listen for Buzzing Sounds

Africanized honey bees make louder, more persistent buzzes than other bee varieties. When disturbed, an Africanized bee hive will create a loud, persistent roar from the aggregated sound of hundreds of bees.

Step 4: Learn About Africanized Bee Habits

Africanized honey bees have different behaviors than other bees. When disturbed, Africanized bees will remain active and agitated for a longer period than European honey bees. They also have a larger “guard zone” around their hive, so they are more likely to attack when a person is close to their hive.
