Mounting and Wiring a Junction Box

Installing and wiring a junction box is a great way to add a convenient access point for adding wires or electrical outlets in your home. Before beginning, make sure the junction box is compatible with your electrical system, and that it meets local building codes. Once you have the necessary supplies, follow these steps to properly mount and wire a junction box.

  1. Turn off the power to the circuit that needs the junction box.
  2. That said, put on the safety gloves, safety goggles, and any other protective clothing.
  3. Cut an opening in the wall to fit the junction box so that its flange sticks out far enough to use its mounting slots and access plates.
  4. Secure the junction box to the wall with mounting screws or braces.
  5. Run the necessary cables through the junction box to connect to the wall switch or outlet.
  6. Run the cables from the appropriate wires in the junction box.
  7. Connect the wires securely using wire nuts or with push-in connectors.
  8. Secure the junction box cover with the appropriate screws, being careful not to over-tighten.
  9. Turn the power back on. Test the circuit and the junction box to ensure proper operation.
