Installing Windows using a USB flash drive is a great way to get a new computer up and running. It’s also a great option if you’re replacing Windows on an older computer, or if you just want to get started with a fresh new copy of Windows. Here's what you need to know to install Windows from a USB drive.
The first step to installing Windows from a USB flash drive is to download the Windows Installer. You can get the installer from Microsoft's website. It's usually free, but you may have to purchase a license if you're installing Windows for the first time.
Once you have the Windows Installer, you can create a bootable USB drive. To do this, you'll need a USB flash drive that's at least 4GB in size and software that can create a bootable USB drive. Free software that you can use for this includes Rufus, Microsoft’s Media Creation Tool, or even Windows built-in DiskPart tool.
Once your bootable USB drive is ready, you can begin installing Windows. To do this, turn on your computer and look for the key to boot from a USB flash drive— this usually includes one of the F keys or the ESC key. When you find it, press and hold it down while you turn on your computer to get to the boot menu screen. Select your USB drive to begin installing Windows.
Once Windows is installed, you need to activate it before you can use it. To do this, you’ll need a valid product key that came with your Windows installer. Enter the key to activate Windows, and you’re ready to go.
