Corrupted Flash Drive? How to Fix It Without Formatting (on Windows and Mac)

When a flash drive becomes corrupted, you may not be able to access the data stored on it. Fortunately, formatting the drive can often resolve this issue, but it may cause you to lose the data in the process. To avoid this, try the following steps in order to repair the drive without formatting.

Windows

  • Unplug the corrupted flash drive from your computer.
  • Launch the Command Prompt as an administrator. To do this, press the Windows Key + X, and select the option, “Command Prompt (Admin).”
  • Once Command Prompt is open, type in the following commands, each followed by pressing the Enter key:
    • diskpart
    • list disk
    • select disk (X), (where X is the number of disks listed in step 3)
    • list partition
    • select partition (X), (where X is the number of partitions)
    • active
    • assign
  • Next, type exit twice, and then plug in the corrupted flash drive again.
  • When the Autoplay menu appears, open the flash drive and check whether it works.

  • Unplug the corrupted flash drive from your computer.
  • Launch the Disk Utility, from your Applications/Utilities folder.
  • Once Disk Utility is open, select the corrupted flash drive from the left-side column.
