How to Drop a Gas Tank

Dropping a gas tank can be an intimidating task, but with proper preparation and safety measures it can be done correctly and safely. Here's how to get the job done.

Step 1: Prepare the Vehicle

  • Raise the vehicle up safely with a jack and never get under the vehicle while it is supported only by a jack.
  • Securely support the vehicle with jack stands.
  • Allow the engine to cool down completely and disconnect the negative battery cable.

Step 2: Drain the Tank

  • Locate the fuel tank drain plug and place an oil pan underneath to catch any spilled fuel.
  • Remove the plug and allow all the fuel to drain out.
  • Reconnect the plug and wipe away any spillage.

Step 3: Remove the Tank

  • Disconnect any wires and hoses attached to the gas tank.
  • Disconnect the retaining straps and lower the tank.
  • Allow the tank to hang from the lift straps by one end, so you can access the tank connections.
