Cleaning Your Toilet Tank Safely and Effectively

A crucial part of your toilet is the tank. Keeping it clean and free of unwanted buildup can increase the life of your toilet and make it look its best. Using the wrong products can be harmful to the tank, so before you start to clean be sure to understand which products you can and cannot use.

No Bleach

Clorox or any other type of bleach should not be poured into your toilet tank. Bleach breaks down organic materials and could possibly disrupt the working parts of your toilet. This could lead to leaking and other damage.

Alternative Cleaning Solutions

Rather than risking damage to your toilet, there are alternatives that are just as effective:

  • White vinegar - add 1 cup of plain white vinegar to your toilet tank periodically. Let sit for 4 hours or overnight. Flush twice to rinse.
  • Borax - mix 1/2 cup of Borax with 1 gallon of water and empty the solution into the toilet tank. Let sit for 2-3 hours then flush to rinse.
  • Baking soda - sprinkle baking soda around the sides of the tank, use a soft brush to scrub, then flush the solution away.

You can also use a commercial product specifically designed to clean your toilet tank, but be sure to read the directions to make sure it is safe to use in your type of toilet.
