No one likes a smelly kitchen or bathroom drain. Fortunately, it is possible to rid your home of the smell without the help of a professional plumber. With the right supplies and the proper method, a fresh-smelling sink is achievable.
1. Put ½ cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by 1 cup of white vinegar. Plug the drain with a wet cloth and let the solution set in the drain for 10 minutes.
2. Unplug the drain and pour a gallon of boiling hot water down the drain. This will help break up any clogs that might be causing the smell.
3. If the smell persists, try using a commercial drain cleaner. Be sure to follow the instructions on the bottle for proper usage.
4. For sinks that are slow to drain, use a toilet brush to scrub the inside of the drain and loosen any debris that could be causing the smell.
5. For tougher odors, a combination of baking soda, vinegar, and boiling water can be used again, sprinkled on a damp cloth, and set in the drain overnight. This might be necessary if the smell does not go away with the first application.
