How to Care for a Basil Plant

Basil is an easy-to-grow herb with a multitude of uses and flavors. Whether you intend to use basil for cooking or add it to your garden to improve flavor and aroma, proper care is essential to ensure healthy and vibrant growth. Follow these steps for optimal care and enjoy your basil!

Instructions

  • Plant in a sunny spot. Basil plants need plenty of sunlight to grow. Pick a spot that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. Make sure the soil is well-drained and nutrient rich for the healthiest plants.
  • Water often. Basil needs to be watered regularly to keep it from getting too dry. Let the soil dry out between waterings and when the top inch of the soil feels dry, it is probably time to water.
  • Fertilize once in a while. To enhance your plant’s growth and flavor, use a water-soluble fertilizer with a balance of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Fertilize every few weeks during the growing season.
  • Prune and pinch the basil. To encourage a healthy, bushy plant, pinch off the top of growing stems to produce a fuller, bushier plant. Also remove yellowing leaves for better airflow and sun exposure.
  • Harvest regularly. During the season, harvesting leaves often will prevent the plant from flowering too quickly. Pinch the tops of the plants to harvest and take only a few leaves from each stem.
