Stopping Your Car in the Shortest Distance

In order to stop your car in the shortest possible distance, you should remember to not only react as quickly as possible, but also use the right techniques.

Steps To Take When Braking and Stopping Your Vehicle

  1. Apply pressure to the brake pedal gradually with firmness. You should press it harder and harder to slow your car down as you get closer to reaching your intended stop point.
  2. Put your foot on the clutch pedal of your manual transmission vehicle. While your foot is on the clutch, gradually depress and hold the brake pedal.
  3. Downshift into lower gears as you reduce your speed. This is only necessary when you need to slow down for a turn, are trying to stop quickly, or if you are on a hill.
  4. Turn on your car’s hazard lights as soon as you're aware of the potential need to stop your vehicle. This will make other drivers aware of your presence.
  5. Steer quickly and the right way. When stopping, try to remain in the middle of the lane. Do not jerk the steering back and forth in an effort to slow down faster.
  6. Look ahead as you approach your stopping point. You want to be sure that you recognize where your stop will likely end up to ensure you do not hit any objects or pedestrians.
  7. Come to a complete stop with your car before you come to a complete stop with the brakes. Depending on the speed you are traveling, you will need to release the brake pedal and stop pressing your clutch as you approach your stopping point.
