Troubleshooting Brake Light Issues

Your brake lights not working can be a perplexing issue. With a few basic steps, you can troubleshoot your brake light circuit and get your lights back up and running in no time.

Steps

  • Check the Brake Fuse. Open the fuse box and inspect the fuse that corresponds to the brake system. If it's blown out, replace it with one of the same amperage value and see if that helps.

  • Inspect the Brake Light Switch. Locate and remove the brake light switch from the brake pedal. Test the switch for continuity with a multimeter and replace it if it is faulty.

  • Investigate the Wiring. If no obvious issue has been found with either the fuse or the switch, it's time to start investigating the wiring. To do this, remove the wiring harness from the brake lights and inspect it for signs of corrosion or wear and tear. If the wiring harness appears to be in working condition, contact a professional mechanic for further help.
